Tools designers these days often produce gadgets that can perform several functions. Lighters double as flashlights, walking canes convert to stools. Hi-tech gadgets are not excluded. Your wristwatch no longer only tells time. It can incorporate a heart rate monitor and even a GPS navigation device. Your cell phone not only connects you with your family and friends, it connects you to the world with its Internet browser. It can also take pictures. And so can your binoculars.

The combination of a binocular with a digital camera, called either a digital camera binocular or digital binocular, opens new possibilities and opportunities. For one thing, you no longer need to carry two separate gadgets to view spectacular sights and record them during your travels, hunting, or bird watching trips. You can watch sports events as if you were up close and take photos of that moment when the ball is dunked into the basket, or when a batter hits a homerun.

In a digital camera binocular, the magnification of both camera and binocular is set at the same level. The most common settings range from 7x to 10x, which is a range that meets the requirements of most binocular users. Because of the same magnification of the binocular and camera, the picture that you get will be close enough to the image that you see in your binocular. However, you cannot expect them to be identical. This is because a digital camera binocular will never be able to look at the world in the same way your eyes can.

Digital camera binoculars available in the market have objective lens diameters starting from 25 mm up to a high of 50 mm. Those with the larger lenses allow you to view images and take pictures even in low-light conditions but you have to sacrifice portability as these are bulkier and heavier.

In terms of the graphic resolution, you can choose a digital camera binocular with a 1 up to 4 megapixel capacity. If you plan to print large photos you will want a camera with a higher megapixel rating. For a high quality 5″x7″ print, for instance, you will need at least 3 megapixels. One megapixel, however, will suffice for your personal album collections.

The LCD screens in digital camera binoculars can come either as a flip up type or one that lies face up on top of the camera. The former comes with more expensive cameras but the ease and convenience it offers offsets this additional cost. With the flip up type, you do not have to drop your camera to view the LCD screen.

There are also digital camera binoculars that offer autofocus options. This feature is a huge help in taking clear, crisp, and sharp photos.

While the best qualities of a digital camera and a binocular may be sacrificed when they are combined into a single gadget, the features available in them are more than sufficient to meet the needs of most users. On balance, digital camera binoculars are a good investment.

You’re in a forest in springtime, you’ve got your binoculars, you hear a bird, you swerve your binoculars to where the sound is coming from and realize that you can’t see a damn thing. That’d suck, right?

When you want to see something, say… the moons of Jupiter or some rare bird, but the eyes the good Lord gave you just won’t do the trick, you may need a pair of binoculars. Ahh yes…From military espionage to bird watching, binoculars have been around to give us a view of a bigger world. So here are some basic things to know about binoculars. Hopefully, they might help in choosing the best binoculars for you.
First on the list is magnification. Yes, that’s right. It’s when something looks bigger how it initially looks like. Magnification is the main purpose of binoculars. Technically, it’s the projection or appearance of images in the way of how it would appear if you were closer to the image without having to, well, move closer. To magnify objects, lenses are used. Lenses are transparent objects, usually glass, that are shaped in such a way that they refract light to produce a real or virtual image.

The difference in magnification is correlated to the purpose of the binoculars. For example, bird watching binoculars have about 7 to 12 diameters magnification. This means that looking through binoculars with this configuration would look as if you were looking at it as if you were 7-12 times closer to it. Military binoculars and those used by amateur astronomers have greater magnifying abilities. This is related to the field of view, which is just the amount of space you could see. The more magnified a view is, the smaller the field of view.

The next thing that comes in handy to know about is the exit pupil. This is a beam that determines how much light is gathered and how bright an image is. To get the brightest images, the exit pupil should be the width of a fully dilated iris of a normal human eye, about 7 mm. When choosing how large the exit pupil should be, you should consider the conditions where you will use the binoculars and how your iris would react in such conditions. If youo do it in the daytime, your pupil would be dilated at about 3 mm so using binoculars set to 7 mm would just be a waste of light.

The last thing would be about eye relief. Eye relief is the distance the observer must position his eyes on the eyepiece to see a clear image. Choosing binoculars with a longer eye relief would mean choosing one with a longer focal length. This would really benefit people who wear glasses because they would inevitably need to put the binoculars farther from their eyes than usual.

There are people who need a set of binoculars for the things that they like to, or have to, do. Unless you are in the Army, in which case the military will supply it to you, you will need to purchase your own pair.

Binoculars, however, come in several types. These are the following :

• Standard
• Digital Camera
• Image Stabilization
• Military
• Rangefinders
• Waterproof
• Compact
• Giant
• Marine
• Night Vision
• Telescope
• Zoom

As if the above list is not long enough, there is another long list of binocular brands to choose from, not to mention the different models and their variations. Selecting the right one can be a journey into a maze of bewildering information and pressure sellers.

Thankfully, there is another list that can provide tips and guides to a confused buyer.

• Decide what you will use the binoculars for. Binoculars have a wide array of uses. Hunters, fishermen, bird watchers, boaters, astronomers, sports spectators, campers, concert and theater enthusiasts, and even just plain travelers and sightseers could use a good set of binoculars. Your specific need should be the main point of consideration. For instance, if you are a theatergoer and you prefer sitting in the back rows, you definitely do not want to carry giant or night vision binoculars. Compact binoculars would suit your needs pretty well. Those who like to take mementoes of places they visit or sights they see could opt for digital camera binoculars.

• Confer with friends who have experience with the type of binoculars you want to buy. If you are contemplating purchasing one for your hunting, look for hunter friends, or perhaps hunters’ groups in your area. You can also browse the internet and look for discussion groups and forums for advice. It is not advisable to walk into a dealer’s shop for advice. Usually, sales personnel are biased in favor of their own product. And they can make you feel that if you do not buy their product at that instant, you are losing the world.

• To enable you to discuss binoculars intelligently with those you seek advice from, you will need to know a few terms, such as:

1.Objective Lens. These are the lenses at the front of the binoculars. You should know that bigger objective lenses gather more light, hence they are better for low light conditions.

2.Prisms. Binoculars use two types of prisms, the porro and roof prisms. Porro prisms are larger and heavier than roof prisms, but the latter are more expensive.

3.Magnification. A magnification of 8x to 10x often works fine for most uses. Beyond this, the area you can view at once begins to get too small and the slightest shaking of your hand distorts the viewed image. A magnification of 8x means that the image you see appears to be 8 times closer to you.

4.Glass Types. The main glass types used for binoculars are the BK-7 and BAK-4. BK-7 is fine as a first unit, but if you are interested in quality, BAK-4 is your choice. Remember, though, that price increases with higher quality.

5.Focusing. Binoculars are incorporated with either center focusing or independent eye focusing. Your choice will depend mostly on which of these are you more comfortable with. You will want to go to the store and try them out for size.

Keep these few tips in mind and you can be sure that you are on your way to owning a fine set of binoculars.
